Zazu Drawing Tutorial

I recently rewatched The Panthera leo Rex and felt inspired to draw its characters. The lions were a scrap harder for me to draw, and so I settled on the much simpler Zazu (who is no less fun to recreate!).

Well, no need for further explanation. Let'due south begin, shall we?

Beak

Nib

Step ane: Beak

You'll brainstorm your sketch with one of Zazu's most prominent features: his large banana-like beak. Go ahead and describe that very shape, leaving the base of operations of the pecker flat.

Eyes

Eyes

Step 2: Optics

Now, draw a large circle on the flat base of the beak nigh the bottom. This is the eye nearest to the screen. For the opposite centre, describe a half circle that rest on the upper portion of the nib near the base. Y'all merely demand a half circle because the remainder of the eye is hidden from view.

Eyebrows

Eyebrows

Pace 3: Eyebrows

On height of each eye describe a curving line as shown in the example. These brand upward Zazu'southward big bushy eyebrows.

Beginning of head

Commencement of head

Step 4: Head

Y'all'll want to suggest the caput area so that the eyes aren't left floating on peak of the beak. Do this past cartoon a wide Five between the eyes and a curving line on the back of the largest center. The line should touch the base of the beak. Meet the prototype above.

Footstep 5: Head (Cont.)

On the dorsum of the head (the curved line you drew) add together two small tufts of feathers every bit indicated by the arrows in the example.

Body and wing

Footstep 6: Body and Fly

The next portion of this drawing that yous'll be tackling is the torso. I've also included the wing in this stride.

This pace is fairly easy. The body will consist of an oval shape similar to that of an egg, only, a fiddling more than pointed. The same matter goes for the wing with the exception that information technology will be drawn within of the body.

Thighs

Thighs

Step 7: Thighs

For the first thigh, draw 1 triangle starting from the bottom of the fly within the torso. Draw the other thigh starting directly from the lesser of the body itself. Call back to leave a little bit of space betwixt the two thighs. They should non exist touching!

Legs and feet

Step eight: Legs and Feet

Because the shapes here are so irregular, I'yard not fifty-fifty going to endeavor to describe them. Simply depict what you see in the example.

Tail

Tail

Footstep 9: Tail

The tail is actually made up of three split feathers, but, for now, you'll exist cartoon them as 1 large shape. The details will come later.

And then get ahead and draw a big upward curving rectangle starting from the pointed end of the body. The shape will first out narrow at its base and gradually widen out towards the top.

Neck

Cervix

Pace 10: Neck

Now that the body is finished, attach it to the head by drawing 2 lines that curve inwards towards 1 another.

Add details

Add details

Step 11: Add together Details

These are those little important nuances that actually make a character look like a graphic symbol. Simple yet and then essential! Also, I decided non to split up how to depict each individual detail in gild to simplify the sketching procedure.

What yous'll be drawing: the lids of the eyes, the pupils, the nostril on the neb, line for the oral cavity, breast feathers, wing feathers, the 3 tail feathers, thigh feathers (at the lesser where the thigh meets the legs), and the toes. Whew! Good matter you have an example to follow, correct?

Clean up

Clean up

Stride 12: Clean Up

End up your sketch by adding in any other necessary details (hairiness of the eyebrows and the rings on the wing and tail feathers). Clean up all devious lines.

What your sketch will look like. Note the absence of the rings on the wing and tail feathers. I decided to add those during the digital inking process. Of course, you'll want to add those to your own sketch since digital inking isn't covered here.

Savor!

That's all for this drawing guide. I hope you had fun drawing the uppity yet likable Zazu. Every bit ever, feel free to inquire whatsoever questions or but drop a note.
